New on Timothy Lake: The Stone Creek Equestrian Group Campground

posted in: News 0

If you’re planning a group ride for next season, you need to check out the Stone Creek Group Campground.

Operated by PGE (Portland General Electric) and located on the beautiful shores of Timothy Lake near Mt. Hood, this is a brand new addition to the area’s equestrian camping options. It officially opened for the Summer 2025 season and offers a distinctively different layout than what many of us are used to.

Designed for Community

Unlike traditional camps where sites are isolated, Stone Creek is designed specifically for groups who want to hang out together. The campground features two large loops, and the heart of each loop is a massive central gathering area.

  • Gathering Area: This center hub is perfect for potlucks and socializing, equipped with multiple picnic tables and BBQ amenities.
  • Campsites: The individual sites are arranged around the loop, facing the gathering area. They are spacious, level, and gravel-surfaced, each with its own fire pit and picnic table.

Equestrian Amenities

The horse facilities are brand new and feature a unique setup compared to other local camps:

  • Shared Corrals: Instead of a single corral at every bumper, the loops feature shared 4-stall corrals. This setup encourages a communal atmosphere and is ideal for clubs or groups of friends riding together.
  • Manure Management: Please note there is no traditional concrete manure bin (muck pit). You must bag your manure and place it into the specifically marked manure dumpsters.
  • Water & Convenience: There are water spigots, dumpsters, and clean toilet buildings located on either side of both loops.
  • Location: The horse camp is separate from the main traffic. It is located on the opposite side of the road from the “people” (general public) campgrounds, ensuring a quieter environment for the horses.

Trails & Access

You won’t be bored here. There are plenty of trail access points directly from the camp, including loops around the campground itself and access to the extensive Timothy Lake trail system (including the Pacific Crest Trail).

How to Reserve

This is a Group Only campground. You cannot reserve individual sites; you must reserve the entire loop (or both loops) for your group.

  • Reservations: Available online at Recreation.gov
  • Search for: “Stone Creek Campground” (Look for the Group sites/loops)

This is a fantastic new resource for Oregon equestrians. If your OET chapter or riding club is looking for a new destination, Stone Creek should be on your list!
