ABOUT OUR CHAPTER

Mt. Hood Chapter runs a hefty schedule of speakers, work parties, rides, camp-outs and attendance at agency meetings. Please see the calendar in Riders’ Roundup and the monthly chapter report, or attend our monthly meeting on the second Thursday, M & M Restaurant, 137 Main Street in Gresham. Social hour and dinner is 6 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. For more information call Barb at 503-695-3399 or mthood@oregonequestriantrails.org

Mt. Hood Chapter opens wilderness trails using crosscut saws in Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, Mt. Hood Wilderness and Badger Creek Wilderness. For non-saw people there is always brush to cut or water bars to clean. Our horse teams get to start up their chain saws to log-out 14 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from Lolo Pass to the Wilderness Boundary near Wahtum Lake. Teams on foot do some early season brushing and drainage work on various trails. The Douglas Trailhead in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness gets a clean-up and sign replacement every year and has become one of our dedicated places. This spacious trailhead provides access to a number of trails that offer both ridge and canyon riding.

This year our chapter is involved in planning for the Sandy River Delta, an important year-round riding area located by the Sandy River just outside of Troutdale; the Mt. Hood National Forest Recreation Site Facility Master Planning (ditto for Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area); new volunteer agreements and a number of other issues.

Please contact us for more information or come to one of our meetings. We have fun, help keep trails open for horses and meet a lot of nice folks.

Photos of Our Activities

Mt. Hood Chapter volunteers gather each year at Douglas Trailhead, by the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, to get the trailhead shaped up and to clear adjoining trails. There is a lot of horse trailer parking and both canyon and ridge trails to ride.
Eagle Creek in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness gets a log-out and other annual maintenance work. Due to the rain we ate lunch when we got back to the trailhead.
A big project for 2007 was the Sandy River Delta planning with the Forest Service and the work parties to pull old fencelines, take out briars, reclaim trails and pick-up litter. The SRD is a good all-year riding area that is close to home. Work will continue in 2008 and a new parking lot is in the works.
This beautiful paintbrush-filled meadow is near Santiam Lake in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. Our chapter was on a camp-out at Big Meadows Horse Camp. It's a terrific area to ride with lots of lakes and mountain scenery.
"Cowboys go Boating" Olallie Lake near Triangle Horse Camp after a day of working on trails.
Work party on the Pacific Crest Trail north of the junction with Huckleberry Trail.
Food, Fun and Sun at our annual Mt Hood Chapter Potluck. July '06
March 2007: Annual spring Beach Ride at Ft. Stevens and Del Rey. Also enjoyed the bumper cars and good restaurants in Seaside.
